Hello,
Has anyone else had trouble posting on the other blogs? I can't seem to do so - it tells me I can't - ???

Maria's concept map on new Media
“All existing media are translated into numerical data accessible for the computer. The result: graphics, moving images, sounds, shapes, spaces, and texts become computable, that is, simply sets of computer data. In short, media becomes new media” (Manovich, 2001, p.25).

Evan's week 5 post, concept map 2
As my concept map shows, new media is new because of it's novelty (perceived or actual), it's ability to be duplicated, and the ability to change content and/or structure.
In terms of novelty, the major factors are when the idea gets accepted by the earliest adapters and elite, when the idea is accepted by the mainstream, and when this idea finally turns into an actual artifact. A perfect example of this is the idea of a computer and the Internet to store information on and connect people virtually. This idea was ignited when Vannevar Bush dreamed of a 'memex'-- a device which could augment human memory; or during the 1960's when Douglas Engelbart first demonstrated the use of a user interface, a mouse, and a word processor. Both of these men were ahead of their times and it took some time for their radical ideas to catch the public's attention, and then to finally be built.

The question of New Media
This is overdue but nonetheless I'll put it up.
I was pretty intrigued with the question of what new media is. It's something that is mentioned and spoken of constantly in media and technology circles, especially with the rise of Web2.0 technologies. Midway through the current decade blogs, online video streaming services and social networks were considered "new media" and everything created before that would then concurrently be considered "old media"?

Comments about Manovich Concept Map - by: Kate
As seen in my Prezi, I outlined what I found to be most helpful, which were the guiding principles. I find this to be the most important because it solidifies what "new media" is vs. what I thought it was! I feel enlightened!! My Prezi links Manovich with examples of New Media and then I take it one more step and provide examples of the New Media I have created and interact with on a daily basis. By doing this extra piece, I was able to 'translate' what I had experience with to what Manovich principle's of New Media -
Manovich Concept Map
I have added quite a bit to this Prezi, so if you choose to go through it, please understand that you can "skip" the YouTube videos. Just hit the arrow keys at the lower right portion of the Prezi.
What's new in New Media? WOW! It changes for me each week - but this week, I have started to solidify my ideas about what it is EXACTLY! Some comparisons are:
When I think of comparisons for old media vs. new media I think of film photograph vs. a digital image OR a newspaper vs. a news webpage OR board games vs. video games OR real world vs. virtual world OR an APP vs. a CD OR a song vs. an MP3 and the list continues. I will post the rest of my answer in just a moment.

Is that the sound of learning?
I kinda dilly-dallied with this one. I spent some time thinking about my Scratch project and came up with a few ideas one, which I plan on carrying out, would incorporate narrative elements with interactivity and player choices - more on this at a later stage. But with time not being on my side I had to simplify the design process and come up with a project that would incorporate my goals of exploring choice, learning and interactivity. So we have The Music Zen Garden.

Evan's Scratch Studio project - Week 4
For my project, I expanded upon my 'story' theme that I tried out a few weeks ago. However, instead of just continuing my project from last time and ending up at the same road blocks, I started fresh. I did encounter some new challenges. For example, I wanted one my dancers to move around the screen. I tried using a combination of 'change x/y by 10' motions blocks, as well as the 'if on edge, bounce' block. However, my sprite got stuck at a corner, so I ended up using a 'glide' motion block.
Unfortunately, I still encountered my old problem of changing the background and clearing the sprites. I was able to change the background via the 'broadcast' block (I am glad I learned an easier way to do something. However, I was still not able to clear the sprites with each change. I did consult Charlene's code on VoiceThread, but the code was way too confusing. I also checked other people's posts, but it is was too late to ask anyone and get a timely answer (I realize that this is my fault). As I was struggling with my background changing, sprite clearing problems, I reflected on how easy it would have been to do this project in a scheduled lab where you can look at others' computers and ask them questions in the moment.
In regards to the question of the week on "what is 'new media'"?, I think New Media is really defined by the medium. Books were once 'new media' and created new channels for the masses to access new knowledge. The same can be said for Scratch-- the ideas of planning, building, and debugging something is not a new concept at all. However, the medium makes this process much easier (and more fun) to access to the masses.

My Scratch project - Week 4
Scratch Project- By Kate
This week we played on scratch together as a family. But, tonight, I created something that was inspired by a couple of Scratch pieces on the gallery - The stick person represents our daughter, Samantha, who introduces our family via a slideshow - with her request, we added bits of music, recorded voices, and hid pictures - although not very complicated, it still took a while to figure out the order of the commands. Sam wanted to do a Mad Lib (like seen in the examples) but I was already half-way completed with this. Perhaps a Mad Lib is line this week!

Maria's Scratch studio project
This week I have spent a few hours on creating my Scratch project. It is nothing complicated, pretty simple… A boy asking you to go in a music store, listen to music and dance. The audience (you) must type “Yes”, in the textbox to accept his invitation and then enter the store. Once you do that, there is music around with a vinyl disc running and the boy break dancing. Not nearly as complicated as the projects on the Scratch site…
Justin's Game for Kids
So this week, we got a couple of iPads to use for the Computers in Education classes that I teach along with others and I am fascinated by the number of educational apps. My 5 year old, and even my 18 month old have enjoyed looking at some of the apps that I downloaded.
So for my scratch project I changed my mind and made a little kids game to hear the name of a few shapes. So here is my project. It was fun thinking about what I could do with the game.

Digital Legos
Hello everyone! Below I found this link that 'Mashable' wrote about digital Legos. I thought it was really cool and very relevant to this class, so I decided to post it. Maybe it could also help you get inspiration for this week's Scratch project!
If you had these digital Legos, what would you use them for?

My conceptual concept map...
I like the idea of concept maps. In theory it makes sense to link what you read in a manner that shows the bonds of ideas and "concepts" that are overriding through them. In fact this is something new to me in that I normally just read and regurgitate what I expect my teachers expect me to know and learn from the set reading list: X + Y = XY; this theory is thus because it is written so and thus it shall be known.
I have trouble relating ideas together because of past pedagogical experiences where it was about how much information you stored and not necessarily how they worked together to form one coherent idea or a pervasive idea among many ideas. I guess that is why I second guessed my first concept map. I read the readings and highlighted the most poignant thoughts, in my view, and from that I opted for a circular chart of concepts from the 3 readings.

Layout of the Blog =)
I just wanted to let you know that I have edited some of the posts on the blog. With some users loading the blogs from phones or people with slower connections, it is sometimes difficult to load the pages. To work around this, I added page breaks to hide the images. When you click on the actual post, however, it will open up and show everything as you intended
To add a page break, simply press the button next to the video button. It looks like a ripped page, called Insert Jump Break. This will create a break in your post so that it is easier to read. I hope this helps!!!
